Instructions
Follow the instructions below to make this easy mars bar slice recipe, first you will be making the rice filling and then the chocolate top layer.
STEP 1: Prepare a pan or dish. Line a rectangular dish or baking tin with vegetable oil or coconut oil and parchment paper.
STEP 2: Melt the butter, mars bars. In a small saucepan set over medium-low heat, melt the butter and chopped mars bars together. Stir occasionally to ensure the two are well mixed, once melted add the salt and vanilla then stir to combine.
STEP 3: Pour the chocolate mixture over the rice cereal. Working quickly, add the rice krispies to a large bowl and pour the melted chocolate and butter mixture over the rice cereal and stir with a rubber spatula until the rice cereal is well coated.
STEP 4: Press into a pan. Pour the puffed rice and mars bar mixture into the prepared tin, and use a rubber spatula or the back of a metal spoon to press the mixture into the dish to create a flat even layer.
STEP 5: Make the chocolate layer. Place the chopped chocolate into a heatproof bowl and melt the chocolate in the microwave in increments of 30 seconds. Stir between each increment to ensure the chocolate is melting evenly.
STEP 6: Assemble. Once the chocolate has melted, pour it over the pressed rice cereal. Use a knife or offset spatula to smooth the chocolate over the surface of the mars bar slice. Top with the extra chopped Mars Bar pieces.
STEP 7: Cool and cut. Place the slice in the fridge for about 2 hours to firm up. Remove the Mars Bar slice from the fridge and use a sharp knife heated in hot water to slice it into 5cm (2-inch) square pieces. Serve and enjoy!
Hint: Work quickly to ensure the chocolate doesn’t set before you have pressed the mixture into the prepared dish.

Equipment
No special equipment is needed to make this recipe, you will just need a microwave to melt the chocolate and a fridge to firm it up after assembly.
To set the mars bar squares you will also need either a rectangle or square pan. The measurements of the pan I used were 27cmx18cmx4cm (10x7x1.5 inches).
Storage
Once assembled, store this recipe in an airtight container at room temperature. This recipe will keep for about 7 days.
I do not recommend freezing this recipe.
Top tips
- Always melt the chocolate slowly, as it is very heat sensitive. Do this in a microwave or in a double boiler.
- The butter and chocolate mixture is ready when the butter and chocolate have melted, the nougat part of the chocolate won't melt entirely so the mixture will be a little thick.
- When making the filling and the layer of milk chocolate, work quickly before the chocolate begins to set.
- Have your dish prepared before you start this recipe, otherwise, the mixture will begin to set before you have had a chance to press it into shape.
- Use a warm knife to easily cut the slice into small pieces
FAQ
If you can find Mars Bars, you can use Bar One chocolate bars or even Snickers bars instead to make this recipe.
If you are having trouble with the chocolate layer, it might be because you melted the chocolate too quickly. The best way to melt chocolate in the microwave is slowly at increments of 15 to 30 seconds and to stir the chocolate well before heating it again.
I love the combination of the crunchy base and smooth chocolate layer of these no-bake slices!
