This crumble recipe features a green apple and strawberry fruit filling, topped with an almond flour and brown sugar crumble. It is baked until golden brown and served with a homemade vanilla custard. Whether you’re making this in winter with a bag of frozen strawberries or making the most of fresh summer berries, this recipe is perfect year-round.

    Ingredients

To make this delicious crumble, you will need the simple ingredients listed below.

Image showing the ingredients needed to make this recipe.
    • Fresh strawberries
    • Apples
    • Lemon juice
    • Lemon zest
    • Cornstarch
    • Cake flour
    • Almond meal
    • Unsalted butter
    • Light brown sugar
    • Salt

Strawberries – fresh or frozen strawberries will work for this recipe.

Apples – I used fresh green Granny Smith apples for this recipe. Pink lady, golden delicious apples, and red apples will also work.

Cake flour – Cake flour, plain flour, or all-purpose flour can be used to make the crumbly topping.

Almond meal – Almond meal or almond flour is added to the crumble mixture for flavour and texture.

Unsalted butter - for the buttery crumble topping, use cold butter rather than room temperature butter.

See the recipe card for quantities.

    Instructions

Follow the simple instructions below to make this strawberry crumble recipe. First, prepare the fruit filling, and then the crumble mix. Once the dessert is assembled, bake it in a preheated oven until it is golden brown.

STEP 1: Preheat oven. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease four 15cm diameter round ramekin dishes with butter.

Image showing step 2, the preapred fruit.

STEP 2: Prepare the fruit. Wash the strawberries, then remove their tops and slice them in half. Wash and peel the apples, then dice them into cubes of approximately 1.5 cm (0.6 inches) in size.

Image showing step 3, the fruit filling.

STEP 3: Make the fruit filling. Add the chopped strawberries, apples, lemon zest, lemon juice, cornflour, and sugar to a large bowl. Use a large wooden spoon or your hands to mix the ingredients together. Set aside.

Image showing step 4, the crumble mixture.

STEP 4: Make the crumble. Add the flour, almond meal, cold butter, brown sugar, and salt to a large mixing bowl. Use the tips of your fingers to massage the ingredients together until a crumble forms.

STEP 5: Assemble. Spoon the fruit mixture evenly between the prepared ramekins and then sprinkle the crumble over the top of the strawberry-apple filling.

STEP 6: Bake. Bake the desserts in a preheated oven for about 30 minutes or until the crumble is a light golden brown. Serve warm with custard or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!

Hint: Don’t overbake the desserts as the fruit will lose its texture and the filling will become mushy.

    Variations

If you can’t get your hands on apples or strawberries, you can make this recipe with a variety of other fruits. Pears, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries will all work well in this recipe.

If you're looking for a homemade custard recipe, try this Vanilla Custard recipe.

    Equipment

You don’t need any fancy equipment for this strawberry apple crumble recipe, just a mixing bowl and oven-proof ramekins.

You can choose to bake this dessert in smaller ramekins for individual portions, like I did, or in one larger ovenproof baking dish. The ramekins I used each feed about two people.

    Storage

I recommended serving this crumble warm, soon after it has baked. Any leftover crumble can be stored in an airtight container or covered with plastic wrap and refrigerated for up to 3 days. To serve leftovers, reheat the crumble in the microwave or oven in an ovenproof dish and serve with ice cream or custard.

This crumble recipe can be frozen before or after baking. Wrap the oven dish in cling film and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before baking or reheating in the oven.

    Top Tips

For the best strawberry apple crumble, follow my top tips below

    • Do not overbake as the fruit filling will lose its texture.
    • Choose ripe, delicious strawberries and apples for this recipe.
    • Don’t cut the fruit too thinly, as you want the apples and strawberry pieces to keep their shape while baking.
    • Cover the surface of the fruit filling with the crumble topping, not just certain areas.

    FAQ

    Can I use frozen strawberries?

Yes, both fresh and frozen strawberries can be used for this recipe. If you can't find strawberries, try using other berries, such as raspberries, blueberries, or blackberries.

How do I know when the crumble has finished baking?

The crumble topping will be golden brown, and you’ll see the fruit filling bubbling through the crumble.

Can I make this recipe without almond meal?

Yes, you can, keep the other ingredients quantities as is and just leave out the almond flour. You can choose to add quick oats if you’d like.
